Nail Reflect beauty, Health n Personal Care

Several times a day your nails are subjected to a variety of traumas, which make them fragile, soft, split, ridged, cracked, dry and brittle.

Don’t
- do house-work without gloves : gloves provide protection from harsh cleaning substances and damage to the nails and matrix.
- Over expose hands to water : just like the skin on your hands, nails become fragile; the protective lipid film is destroyed and the nail becomes soft.
- Overuse of nail polish : some nail polishes use pigments which migrate toward the nail plate and deeply impregnate them with this discoloration; even after polish has been removed, the nail retains his unsightly colour.
- Use an acetone-containing solvent : as this is too aggressive it will dry out the nail and make it weak and brittle.
- Use a formaldehyde-based hardener : even if the effect is striking from the very first application, the nail very quickly becomes crumbly, brittle and yellow(formaldehyde destroys he srucure of keratin, and diminishes the resiliency).
- Use artificial nails : the nails cannot “breathe” and may be severely damaged by certain resin-based glue and harsh chemicals. In some cases they become subjected to fungal infections.
- Use metal nail-file : as the are harder, they can cause repeated trauma(striations). Use a pliable emery file instead.

Do:
- Stimulate the nail by massaging : massaging he tips of your fingers stimulates the blood and lymph circulations; tapping your finger is also stimulating.
- Give your nails a rest : if you must use nail polish, give your nails a holiday one week in every month. Nail polish gives the nail a hermetic coating which stops it “taking in oxygen”.
- Eat balanced and varied diet with plenty of vitamins and minerals; it is also good for healthy nails.
1. CALCIUM for nail growth: dairy products, fish.
2. SULPHUR is a constituent of keratin, vital for structure: cabbage, onion, garlic, cucumber.
3. IRON for tissue oxygenation and srengtening brittle nails; lentils, grapes, dried fruit and nuts.
4. VITAMIN A for protection: oily fish, carrot, butter.
5. VITAMIN B for protection: wheat, celery.
6. VITAMIN C for suppleness and vitality: kiwi fruit, tomatoes, citrus fruit.
- Relax : a little relaxation to make up for long hours and stress is also good for healthy nails.

What The Infection Looks Like

Got discolored, brittle, or chipped nails?

If you have thick, discolored, or flaky nails you may have a nail fungus infection that lives under your nail. This infection is caused by an active, live fungus, or dermatophytes. The infection actually eats your skin and nail, so it can continue growing and may spread to other nails.

Your nails may look "different," be so thick they're hard to trim, and may cause you discomfort, pain or tenderness that disrupts daily activities.

The infection may have taken hold because:
~You stubbed your toe and damaged the nail.
~You may have cracked a fingernail or trimmed it too close.
~Your bare feet may have come into contact with a place where someone with an infection recently stood, such as a locker room, shower, or pool area.
~If you shared a nail file, emery board, or nail clippers with someone who has an infection, it may have gotten under your nail.

Any way you damage a nail gives this fungus an opening to get under your nail and grow. The sooner you visit your doctor and get diagnosed and effective treatment, the sooner, you can stop the infection from getting worse and begin to see healthier nails grow again.

As time passes, the infection can worsen and may cause pain or tenderness
~Nails may look brownish, yellowish, with little white patches. Some may even be brown or black.
~Nails may get flaky, brittle, and chipped.
~Bits of "gunk" or
debris may collect under your nails.
~Your nails may smell bad.
~Toenails may get so thick that wearing shoes cause pain.
~Discomfort from the infection may make it hard to walk, work, or do other activities. The daily task of putting on socks or stockings can even become difficult.

IN-GROWN TOENAILS

What is an Ingrown Toenail?
When a toenail is ingrown, the nail is curved downward and grows into the skin, usually at the nail borders (the sides of the nail). This “digging in” of the nail irritates the skin, often creating pain, redness, swelling, and warmth in the toe.
If an ingrown nail causes a break in the skin, bacteria may enter and cause an infection in the area, which is often marked by drainage and a foul odor. However, even if your toe isn’t painful, red, swollen, or warm, a nail that curves downward into the skin can progress to an infection.

What Causes an Ingrown Toenail?
Ingrown toenails can develop for various reasons. In many people, the tendency to have this common disorder is inherited. In other cases, an ingrown toenail is the result of trauma, such as stubbing your toe, having an object fall on your toe, or engaging in activities that involve repeated pressure on the toes, such as kicking or running.
The most common cause of ingrown toenails is improper trimming. Cutting your nails too short encourages the skin next to the nail to fold over the nail. Another cause of ingrown toenails is wearing shoes that are tight or short.
Certain nail conditions are often associated with ingrown toenails. For example, if you have had a
toenail fungal infectin or if you have lost a nail through trauma, you are at greater risk for developing an ingrown toenail.

Treatment
Sometimes initial treatment for ingrown toenails can be safely performed at home. However, home treatment is strongly discouraged if you suspect you have an infection, or if you have a medical condition that puts your feet at high risk—for example, diabetes, nerve damage in the foot, or poor circulation.

Home care: If you don’t have an infection or any of the above conditions, you can soak your foot in room-temperature water (add Epsom’s salt if you wish), and gently massage the side of the nail fold to help reduce the inflammation.
- Avoid attempting “bathroom surgery.”
Repeated cutting of the nail can cause the condition to worsen over time. If your symptoms fail to improve, it’s time to see a foot and ankle surgeon.

Physician care: The foot and ankle surgeon will examine your toe and select the treatment best suited for you. Treatment may include:
- Oral antibiotics.
If an infection is present, an oral antibiotic may be prescribed.
- Surgery.
A simple procedure, often performed in the office, is commonly needed to ease the pain and remove the offending nail. Surgery may involve numbing the toe and removing a corner of the nail, a larger portion of the nail, or the entire nail.
- Permanent removal.
Various techniques may be used to destroy or remove the nail root. This treatment prevents the recurrence of an ingrown toenail. Your foot and ankle surgeon will determine the most appropriate procedure for you.

Following nail surgery, a light bandage will be applied. Most people experience very little pain after surgery and may resume normal activity the next day. If your foot and ankle surgeon has prescribed an oral antibiotic, be sure to take all the medication, even if your symptoms have improved.

Preventing Ingrown Toenails
Many cases of ingrown toenails may be prevented by following these two important tips:
- Trim your nails properly. Cut your toenails in a fairly straight line, and don’t cut them too short. You should be able to get your fingernail under the sides and end of the nail.
- Avoid poorly-fitting shoes.
Don’t wear shoes that are short or tight in the toe box. Also avoid shoes that are loose, because they too cause pressure on the toes, especially when you run or walk briskly.
